Engineering the Future

Engineering the future

Since 1977, apprentices have been central to our business and in June 2024, we launched a new dedicated apprenticeship programme in partnership with New College Durham to address skill shortages and build a skilled workforce for our region.

We recruit apprentices annually with many graduates progressing into senior roles.

Our apprenticeship programme combines structured academic education with practical, hands-on training to equip participants with the skills necessary to thrive in the manufacturing sector. Mentorship is a cornerstone of our training methodology and we have invested heavily in bespoke mentor training, providing one-on-one guidance, ensuring personalised support for each apprentice.

Our apprentice recruitment journey kicks off each January, welcoming new apprentices to join our team every September.

What our
team say

Hear directly from our team about what it’s like to work here – the successes, the exciting challenges and why they love being part of Dyer.

I am currently the Operations Lead for the JobShop division but have worked in various engineering roles throughout the business since I started as a 21-year-old Mechanical Engineering graduate in 2013.

Following a 2-year stint working for another manufacturer in Scotland from 2020 I returned to Dyer Engineering in 2022 when I realised that my current job was not as enjoyable or as fulfilling as my role at Dyer had been – and I certainly do not regret returning. I thoroughly enjoy my role, being part of a brilliant team, and working for a thriving business that cares for its employees. I have always felt supported and been given opportunities to develop my knowledge and skills, most notably day release for a degree-apprenticeship in Business Leadership and Management.

I am excited about the future and my role in helping the business to succeed and continue its growth.

Robin Hiles - Operations Lead

I have worked at Dyer since leaving school. I was a successful apprentice in fabrication & welding. I have then been working my way up the ladder, as they say, from Team Leader of the fab/weld department to Annfield Plain Site Supervisor, then to Harelaw Site Supervisor, and finally to Site Operations Lead. I have been here 20 years. My favorite part of my job is seeing the progression of people, from TL (Team Leader) progression and shop floor progression, from non-skilled to becoming very talented individuals/employees.

I have been given brilliant opportunities through the years to progress through the business, with various aspects of training including internal and external coaching.

I love the flexibility in hours to support kid's school start and after-school activities this has been very helpful in my personal life.

Glen Harrison - Site Operations Lead (Harelaw)

From the moment I started Dyer, I felt welcomed into an enthusiastic and inclusive culture. My colleagues have been incredibly supportive, making collaboration easy and enjoyable. I appreciate how the leadership genuinely values our input and encourages us to share ideas. I’m thrilled to be part of Dyer and look forward to continuing to grow and make an impact within this amazing team. I highly recommend this workplace to anyone looking for a fulfilling career!

Ashley Wright - Procurement Lead

Working at Dyer has been incredibly rewarding. The flexibility here allows for a great work-life balance, and the support from mentors and colleagues makes every challenge manageable and growth focused. There's a strong commitment to personal development, so I’ve had the chance to expand my skills and progress in my chosen field. It’s a place where you feel valued, supported, and encouraged to succeed every day.

Matthew Dyer - HSE Lead

I like working at Dyer as every day it is a friendly and helpful atmosphere where anyone is willing to give each other a helping hand wherever in the company you may be regardless of position or sector. In the machine shop where I work, everyone is very talkative and no one is ever made to feel left out which means that the day goes by very quickly as I am always kept busy doing a variety of tasks such as using the grinders, practising my welding or even just maintaining the shop floor by sweeping up. Overall. I really enjoy working at Dyer and can’t wait to be here full time.
